Ceiling Fan Direction in Summer and Winter

Switching your ceiling fan spinning direction in summer and winter can definitely save you money. Fortunately most of the ceiling fans that are sold today are designed to rotate clockwise and counter clockwise. Recent survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy says correctly using a ceiling fan can save on both cooling and heating costs. This doesn’t mean you can turn off your air conditioning or your heater. Using the ceiling fan in right way along with air-conditioning or heater will help you reduce your energy bill. Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy, has concluded when using the ceiling fan you can save up-to 30 percent on your energy bill in summer and up-to 15 percent in winter.

Does this mean the fan changes the temperature of the room? Answer to that question is NO. The fan doesn’t changes the temperature of the room rather it makes the person in the room to feel cold or warm. In order to maximize the savings in your energy bills its highly recommended to turn off the fan once all the people in the room has left.

Reverse Switch

Now let’s see how you can make the ceiling fan spin in clockwise or in counter clockwise direction. Ceiling fans have a reverse switch on the motor housing. Check the location of that switch before you purchase a new ceiling fan to be sure that it is easy to reach. The instruction manual of the fan will also tell you how to change the ceiling fan direction for that model.

It is recommended to hang the ceiling fan between seven and nine feet from the floor. The clearance between the ceiling fan blades and the ceiling should be a minimum of 10 inches. If you have vaulted ceilings, you can buy a downrod from your local hardware store and hang the ceiling fan to get appropriate positioning.

Make sure you’re installing the right ceiling fan in the right location. For example you should not install an indoor ceiling fan out in your deck. The humidity and heat outside may cause damage to the blades and their by not giving you the comfort.

Ceiling Fan Direction in Summer

In summer the ceiling fan should rotate counterclockwise. This allows the blades to brig a nice breeze to the person in the room. This is the best ceiling fan direction for air conditioning since it makes the air feel cooler than it is.

You can make the ceiling fan to switch counter clockwise by moving the switch in the fan’s motor housing. Check your fan’s instruction manual to confirm. If you are unsure if your fan is turning the correct direction, stand directly under the fan and look up. If the fan is moving counterclockwise and you feel a rush of air, it’s in the correct setting for summer. Before reaching to the fan make sure the ceiling fan is switched off and the blades have come to a full stop. If you’re person who grasp things faster by watching a video rather than reading then please feel free to watch my YouTube video below:

As said above when you stand under the fan and you don’t feel the air then turn off the fan and wait for blades to stop then flip the switch in the motor housing and turn your fan again. If you still don’t feel the air then either the motor in the fan is failing or the blades are flat and unable to sweep air. It’s time for an upgrade.

Again remember ceiling fan is not going to reduce the temperature of the room it only makes the person cooler. When set in correct direction, ceiling fan creates an updraft and moves the air up towards the ceiling in summer.

Ceiling Fan Direction in Winter

Many may think why should I even bother about turning my ceiling fan when it’s already cold and snowing outside. When set in correct direction ceiling can make you feel warm and save money in your energy bill.

In winter the ceiling fan should rotate clockwise. Use the lowest setting of the fan. Having to spin in clockwise the ceiling fan pulls the warm air from the ceiling and moves the cold air from the room and thereby making the person in the room to feel warm.

A clockwise ceiling fan direction for high ceilings is especially important in winter. It moves the warmer air trapped at the very top of the room down. The air flows toward the floor and along the walls. This makes the room feel warmer, allowing you to lower the thermostat.

Adjusting your ceiling fan to the season will help make your home more comfortable. Setting your ceiling fan to rotate in counter clockwise and in clockwise in winter will help you to save in your energy bills.
