We all know the use of a sprinkler system during summer. When the weather gets cold and colder its time to winterize your sprinkler system. This is true for the most part of the country. Winterizing your sprinkler system will ensure the system is not damaged due to extreme conditions. When I say damage it’s not only to the sprinkler system it also includes underground pipes, sprinkler heads and valves. If done correctly the process of winterization is very simple. It’s done by blowing all the water in the pipes out by air out method.
You may be wondering how can pipes and sprinkler heads can damage due to cold. During the colder season the water in the pipes will get frozen and will cause the damage. By winterizing the system one can eliminate the opportunity for freeze damage.
If you’re in a borderline state where it may or may not have a colder temperature every year. So you may think you can skip winterizing the sprinkler system. I’d still recommend having the winterization complete because incase if their is a cold flow through then you don’t need to worry about broken pipes which results in expensive repairs. If nothing happens at least you had peace of mind.
If you live in one of the states where it snows definitely then get your sprinkler system winterized when the fall start before the cold air kicks and the pipes get frozen. As they famous saying “Prevention is better than cure”, winterization cost is very minimal when compared to the repair cost caused by broken pipes, damages sprinkler heads or system.
Can you Do It Yourself or Should you Hire a Professional
As with any work related to house if you’ve the right tool yes you can do it by yourself or you can hire a profession to do the job for you. Like any other job there are ton of DIY videos available. If you decide to DIY make sure you’re following the steps in order because not all sprinkler system are the same. My recommendation is hiring a professional or if you’ve a landscape company whom you contract with, they may offer the service in the contract or for additional pricing.
What’s the Cost?
The average cost to winterize your sprinkler system depends on two factors: (i) where do you live in United States and (ii) what’s the size of your system. Mostly a person who has 8 or less zone system may end up paying anywhere from $50 to $125 to have a profession do the job properly.
If you decide to do it yourself, add the cost of renting a more powerful air compressor and air hose to your list. Make sure you’re introducing right amount of air. Too much of air may melt the pipes and cause internal damage which may not be visible at the time. On the other hand hiring a professional knows how and when to reduce or regulate the pressure so that you don’t introduce too much or use too little.
Takeaway
Whether you decide to DIY or hire a professional make sure you winterize the system to avoid any high repair expenses. Especially if you live in a place where it’ll snow or cold air pass through.
