As the saying goes prevention is better than cure. When it comes to property maintenance cost less than fixing. If you live somewhere that gets colder during winter months then this article is for you. In this article I’ve listed all the tips that I do to take care of my property. I hope it comes handy to you. If I’ve missed some important maintenance please do leave it in the comment section.

Fall home maintenance is essential to prepare your home for the colder months. Here are some tasks to consider:

1. Clean Gutters: Remove leaves and debris from gutters to prevent clogs and water damage.

2. Check Roof: Inspect the roof for damaged shingles or leaks. If any shingles needs to be replaced it’s better to get it done so you don’t have any leaks on your roof. It cost less to replace few shingles than fixing leaked roof in spring.

3. Seal Gaps: Seal gaps around windows and doors to prevent drafts. You can also install air sealant sheets. Having this step done will help you to reduce your energy bill and also makes you comfortable. More the heater runs the interior air becomes dry.

4. HVAC Maintenance: Service your heating system to ensure it’s working efficiently. Having your HVAC cleaned and maintained will not only reduce your energy bill but you’ll have better air quality as well. Left image shows cleaned exterior HVAC and the right image shows dirt before cleaning.

5. Clean Chimney: If you have a fireplace, have the chimney cleaned and inspected. Having a cleaned chimney will make sure smoke from burning wood goes out and not returned into the house. Inhaling smoke in air is not good for you and your family health.

6. Test Smoke/CO Detectors: Replace batteries and test your detectors. If the detector starts beeping it’s time to replace the battery.

7. Lawn Care: Fertilize your lawn and trim trees and bushes. Due to heavy snow or wind you don’t want a tree branch falling and damaging your roof. Make sure you level the flower beds and aeration will also help for free flow of water.

8. Drain Outdoor Faucets: Prevent freezing by draining and disconnecting hoses. Also make sure to winterize your sprinkler system. If you want to read the importance and the need for winterization click on the link below where I’ve mentioned in detail.

9. Insulate Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing. You don’t want to have broken pipe.

10. Clean Yard: Rake leaves, clean up debris, and pots. Don’t forget to move or cover your grill and outdoor furniture.

These tasks will help you maintain your home’s comfort and safety during the fall and winter months.
