The moment winter is done we all think of going to beaches and getting ready to admire those beautiful garden flower but there may be hidden problem in your home that needs attention to. Spring and Summer are the best time to pay attention to those and get them maintained or fixed if needed.
Let me start from inside out. First lets take small steps inside the house and then lets head out and enjoy spring weather.
1. Replace Filters
Check for your furnace / air conditioner, water, range hood filter. Based on your home system these filters needs to be changed every quarter or atleast every 6 months.
If you want to know how to replace furnace filter checkout my YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Nky21jFyQ

2. Check For Gutters
As mentioned in my winter maintenance tips if you’ve cleaned your gutters by removing all fallen leafs then this step is easy. Get a ladder and make sure you’re safe to climb because your safety is more important. Once you’re up clean any additional debris that got collected and run water through the gutters. By running water you can check for any leaks and if any gutters need to be sealed (caulking) or replaced then spring is the best time to get it done. Make sure downspouts are away from the house so the storm doesn’t cause any damage.
3. Examine Roof Carefully
Since you’re upon the ladder already and cleaning the gutters take time to inspect roof as well. Snow storms and winter might’ve caused damage to your roof. This includes soft spots, missing shingles also get on your attic and check for any discoloration. If you find any discoloration on your attic then its an indication that water leak might’ve happen and its time for you to repair the roof and replace if needed.
4. Check Your Lawn Sprinkler System
Turn on your home sprinkler system and make sure no broken sprinkler head. If you want to know how to turn on your sprinkler system please check my YouTube video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f_rU0bQzYw. Also check sprinkler is not throwing water onto your home, this will avoid any unwanted moisture being created on your home wall. Make sure you program your sprinkler system so that you can avoid water wastage and save money in your utility and water bill. I’ve removed old programmable sprinkler system to Smart sprinkler system. You can check out YouTube video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpuOiJHjsqM.
5. Reseal And Weatherstrips Windows
Check for any gaps in window and door sealing. If needed remove the old one and reseal and apply weatherstrip windows to make sure no leak in air. This step sounds simple but an important one because leak in air will make your air conditioner work hard to maintain the temperature inside your home.
6. Clean And Service Cooling System
Replacing air conditioner filter alone doesn’t take care of the system. Don’t wait till the temperature soar. Spring temperature is ideal time to hire a profession to have the air conditioner system cleaned and serviced. This will avoid any unwanted moisture build up around the system.
7. Clean Dryer Vent
You might’ve heard many incidents where house caught in fire because of dryer vent clog. My intention here is not to scare you but to alert you. Due to extreme cold temperature you didn’t get a chance to clean your dryer vent. Spring and summer is best time to clean dryer vent to make sure the heat goes directly out of your house and also your dryer is performing at maximum efficiency and saves you money.
8. Sharpen Garden Tools and Lawn Care
Who doesn’t love to maintain a beautiful garden. Make sure you sharpen your garden tools so your job is done soon. Inspect your lawn for any weeds and crab grass. Make sure you pull any weeds and crab grass from the root. If you’ve noticed water clogging in your lawn then aeration will help. Apply fertilizer for a healthy lawn.
9. Patio furniture and Grill
If you’ve left your patio furniture out during winter, make sure you give them a rinse. After all these work it’s time to turn on the grill and enjoy the food. Just one last step before that make sure you clean your grill and check for any leaks.
As I always say being a home owner always comes with responsibilities and all of the above said seems like a lot of work but trust me it’s not.
